Work has started on regenerating the Irwell Sculpture trail, which has deteriorated somewhat in recent years to the point where some sculpture have had to be removed. Therefore the original site has been replaced with updates of work in progress. The 33-mile long arts trail starts in Salford and follows the River Irwell through Bury up to Bacup in Rossendale, Lancashire. Funding has now been released from Arts Council England for major development work of the Trail. Some of which will be invested in marketing and interpretation to support access to the trail, including using innovative and accessible new technologies such as GPS and mobile phone technology for onsite interpretation and downloadable content such as audio guides and video from a new and rejuvenated website. New routes are also being developed to link to other tourist attractions such as Salford Quays, Ordsall Hall, Bury Museum and Art Gallery and Rossendale Adrenaline Gateway. Work on transforming the Irwell Sculpture Trail has already begun. The audit of existing artworks and pathways will highlight problems and issues, as well as potential new routes which the Trail can adopt. www.irwellsculpturetrail.co.uk/downloads/Irwell_Sculpture_Trail%20email_Dec09.pdf
