Tonight (July 28th) sees the start of a new sitcom about people who love to go walking. The Great Outdoors will be screened on BBC 4 and focuses on the lives, loves and adventures of a small walking club. One of the central aspects of the narrative is how leader of the group Bob is faced with a challenge from newcomer Christine, who, Grough notes, includes a walking GPS among her array of high-tech gadgets. Those wishing to get such a device to help with their navigation can pick one up from the nearest Go Outdoors store. A walking GPS can be useful for navigation in places where there is very poor visibility, or where finding a precise point can be difficult, such as a summit on a flat plateau. One such example is the summit of Kinder Scot, the highest point in Derbyshire, which is marked by a small cairn in the midst of a flat peat bog over 2,000 ft up. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00t6z51www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00t8xm9
