Those who like to go walking or cycling from their home to place of work can benefit from the extra focus and concentration such an act gives them, it has been claimed. Business expert and international speaker Roger Harrop suggested it is not just the exercise that does people good, stating: "If you walk or cycle to work, you not only experience the benefits of being outside and endorphin release, but you can also take the opportunity to …. think about the big picture." This is in contrast with the focused concentration driving takes or the clutter and polluted air of trains, he noted. Those planning this may wish to get walking jackets or cycling clothing for when they do so in bad weather. Using such means to get to work has become increasingly popular, a study by Bristol University's Centre of Exercise, Nutrition and Health Sciences recently showed. It found that between 1998 and 2007, the proportion of people walking to work rose from 19 per cent to 30 per cent, while those cycling increased from seven per cent to 12 per cent. www.gooutdoors.co.uk
