Hardwick Hall Walk
Enter Hardwick Hall grounds from the main entrance and park up in the walled grounds.
Toilets are at the centre edge of the field towards the house.The exit road to the right corner.
Leave the field by the exit road and make your way past the front of the new house and past the old house.The old house is maintained in its ruined state, which means some stonework has been replaced to stop the ruin collapsing further.
making your way down the drive past the stableyard there is a stone masons workshop on the left. Examples of cut and carved stone can be seen outside, theres also a display room with a short video about their work for Hardwick and other great houses.
Where the drive turns sharp right there's a gate on the left. Take the gate and follow the path.
the path will eventually lead to a junction, the left path leads back to the Stable yard. Take the right path into Lady Spencers wood.
Follow the path through the woods continue straight ahead where the path leaves to the left. continue until on the path it comes to a drive, Carry on straight ahead along the drive.
You will eventually come to a group of buildings. There's a cottage parallel to the drive. Go past the cottage and turn immedialtely left and go along the gravel path.
Follow the path into the field and accross the field.
Follow the path into the woods and out the other side.
Continue straight accross the field to the trees.
turn left at where the path and track cross inside the trees and follow the old railway track bed.
Eventually the track bed will widen and you'll reach a car park and picnic area to the left. cross this to the main road.
Turn left onto the road and walk straight ahead.
When you come to the junction turn right with the main road(duke's drive). a few yards ahead on the left is a footpath accross the fields, take the footpath.
Follow the footpath accross two fields and trn left on the main road towards Ault Hucknall. Follow the road passing the church on your right.
Just after the church on the left is a cemetary car park and a drive. take the drive and follow it.
Continue on the drive accross the field, along the edge of the wood until the drive comes to a house on a bend. There's a gate on the bend. Go through the gate and accross the fields.
When you get to the drive cross it and continue on the path to the lakes. When you get to the lakes you can either continue across the lakes and take the left fork in the path back up to the houses, the right path to the pub (Hardwick Inn), or turn right on the gravel path before crossing the lakes and continue the walk.The path is the larger of the two and hugs the fence veering away from the lake.
Follow the drive through to trees in the trees take the path to left which takes you around the lake.
Follow the path all around the lake (Millers Pond) anti clockwise until it comes back to the car park and drive.
Follow the drive out of the car park until it comes to the junction. Pass the buildings (Park Centre) on your left and continue along the drive.
As you go through the woods there will be a path to the ponds on your left. Take the path and take the right hand fork so that the pond (Great Pond) is on your left.
Follow the path along the pond, then along the woods and into the woods.
You'll go over a series of board walks and bridges.
Pass the Duck Decoy on your left down the steps.
Continue out of the woods and turn right. There are several carved sculpture here. Part of the park sculpture trail.
after a few yards either follow the path to your left across the field and up the steps or continue to skirt the wood on your right towards the pub.
Go through the gate on the drive and the Hardwick Inn is almost opposite. There's a large garden at the rear where you can eat outside. The pub does carvery meals and a variety of other meals with options. The meals are very good portions.
Head back to the car park by turning right on the drive from the pub and going through the gate. From here you can either follow the drive up and around to the stone workshops and old house or cut across the fields, up the steps and up the slope at the rear of the old hall. Make your way back to the car park or visit the house. The house takes about 3 hours to look around properly though.
