1. Start from Ashford Arms. Find parking space somewhere in Ashford. Walk along Church street passing the Bulls Head. Continue to octagonal shelter. On left is Sheepwash Bridge. Turn right on Fennel Street and bear right at grass triangle up Vicarage Lane. Take foot path signposted Monsal Dale. Climb the steps on your right and go through the squeeze stile into open fields. Walk straight ahead bearing slightly right to style at end of field.
2. This takes you to Pennyunk Lane, turn left. Pass bungalow (Ploverfield and at the pond follow the track to the rt until it ends at a gate. Pass through gate and walk up the left hand side of the field. Pass though wicket gate and turn right. Keep straight on this for 50 yards until you come out above Monsal Dale. Stunning views.
3. Turn right along path running above the dale to Monsal Head.
4. Walk past Monsal Head Hotel.
5. At Signpost take road for Little Longstone. Pass a chapel and pinfold and the Packhorse Inn, 100 yards past the Packhorse take the signposted path for Monsal Trail.
6. Go slowly downhill until you reach a wall. Walk parallel with the wall though a wicket gate and keep straight ahead through next two fields until you reach Monsal Trail. Climb over a style on to the trail.
7. Turn left on the trail and keep on for about a mile. After going over three bridges you see a house on your left and a Bridle path sign on your rt for Bakewell. Take this bridle way and continue along this path up the hill. The path then descends in to Bakewell.
8. Turn right at the bottom and cross the river using the footbridge. You eventually come out on the A6. Turn right and pass the business parks. Opposite Deepdale business park is a small opening between houses. Follow this path down to the river (unless the river is in flood in which case keep to the main road). Continue on undulating path, pass a waterfall on Right and through a gate leading to the river and then back to A6. Turn Right back to the Ashford Arms.
Distance approx 8 miles
Time about 4 hours
Two hills to climb.
Fields and river bank can be muddy.
